The American Hop Hornbeam is a small understory tree found in a variety of forested environments. It features brown, scaly bark and serrated leaves up to 4” in length and that turn yellow in the autumn. Its flowers are greenish in color and it bears fruit similar in appearance to hops. It prefers moist, well-drained, soil, but can adapt to wet, dry, poor, or alkaline soils with a slightly reduced growth rate. There are no known pests associated with the hop hornbeam.
